Inexpensive Ways To Spend An Afternoon

Whether you’re someone like me who tries to be financially savvy or you’re just looking for a few ways to cut back on spending but still want to find things to do – this post is for you.

There are so many free and affordable ways you can still have fun and keep yourself busy without breaking the bank

Go for a walk

This one seems like it’s not all that exciting but it’s really what you make of it. If you haven’t explored your neighborhood or city by foot, take some time to walk around and see what new places you discover. I live in an urban area and i’m an avid walker. I walk anywhere from 3-7 miles everyday and I always feel like i’m discovering something new in my town that I hadn’t seen before, whether that’s a cute coffee shop or restaurant. Walking is also such a great form of exercise so it’s a great way to incorporate both exercise and a relaxing activity into one.

Have a picnic instead of going out to eat

Going out to eat at a restaurant can get pricey quickly between appetizers, main course, drinks, dessert, and the tip. Eating out at a restaurant every now and then is perfectly fine but if you’re looking to cut back a little then opt in for a picnic instead. This way you can still have a different dining experience from eating at home but you don’t have to spend too much money. Find a park nearby, bring a blanket to sit on, and your food of choice for the day – you don’t need a fancy picnic basket or 3-course meal to enjoy eating out.

Bring the movie night indoors

I’m a huge fan of going to the movies and seeing a film on the big screen but I’ve found that you can recreat this experience in the comfort of your own home and it’s much more affordable. Between movie tickets and snacks a trip to the movies for 2 people can easily cost $40. The majority of people now have access to a streaming platform like Netflix, Hbo, or Hulu that have great movie options that you’re already paying for! It’s also a lot cheaper to buy your favorite snacks at the store than at the movies. I read somewhere once that movie theatre popcorn is marked up by over 400%!!! And, when you’re at home you can have as many free refills as you want on your drink and snacks. It’s a win-win.

Coffee Date

If you love coffee as much as I do, you probably have your daily cup however you take it without putting much thought into it. Have you ever taken the time to just sit and enjoy a cup of coffee with someone? It’s such a simple yet wonderful experience. I live near so many great coffee shops that all have speciality drinks so it’s a nice way to explore my area and find a new spot. One of my newly found favorite coffee shops is by a park so this makes for the best combo – I grab a drink from the shop and take a quick walk over to the park. If you live near a coffee shop that has indoor seating, this is also a great way to enjoy a cup of coffee with a friend or by yourself. The majority of coffee shops also offer some sort of bakery treat if you’re craving something sweet with your cup of jo.

Take a hike

I mean this in the nicest way possible! If you don’t have much experience with hiking, I highly recommend using All Trails (they also have an app). This app is perfect for all things walking and hiking and helps you find great trails, provides directions for your hike or walk, and lots of people leave reviews and picures on trails so you get an idea of exaclty how difficult or easy the trail will be.

Going on a hike is a great way to spend an afternoon, or even an entire day depending on how long your hike is. I like to pack some snacks or a light lunch and make a whole day of it. My favorite times of year to hike are from September-October or April-May – the weather is perfect for spending time outdoors.

What are some inexpensive or completely free ways you spend your free time?
